Police Suspend Activist 'The Shadow' Over Claims of Influence with Officers

Israel Police Commissioner Inspector-General Danny Levy has suspended right-wing activist and musician Yoav Eliasi, widely known as 'The Shadow,' from his command of a Tel Aviv District rapid response squad. This decision comes amid controversy surrounding recordings where Eliasi allegedly claimed influence over police officials.

The suspension follows a Haaretz report detailing Eliasi's boasts about his connections, suggesting they helped prevent the closure of an entertainment complex where he was a partner. In the recordings, Eliasi reportedly stated, "this club cannot be touched," and insisted that any police contact be directed to him immediately, regardless of the time.

Eliasi expressed anger when informed that police had ordered the venue closed following a violent incident, inquiring about the responsible officer to address the matter personally. He also mentioned a close relationship with Menashe Mansour, an officer at the Lev Tel Aviv police station, saying, "Menashe is a friend like a brother, I will speak with him now."

Following Levy's decision, Eliasi's firearm was confiscated, and the Police Internal Investigations Department has launched a review. Employees and security personnel at the venue reportedly viewed Eliasi as their point of contact for police issues, believing his connections helped keep the complex operational even after serious incidents. Idan Harpak, the venue's head of security, testified that he was instructed to contact Eliasi whenever police intervened.

Eliasi's attorneys, Ariel Atari and Yaniv Lankri, issued a statement asserting that the police commissioner did not remove Eliasi from his position. They highlighted Eliasi's dedication as a commander with the rank of chief superintendent, emphasizing his commitment to resident security and the praise he has received for his actions. They expressed confidence that the commissioner's decision was not final.
