Police Tighten Traffic Enforcement in Mityana After Fatal Crash Linked to Reckless Youth Driving Group

Mityana District police have escalated traffic enforcement measures after a fatal road crash claimed the lives of two women and left four others injured. The incident occurred in Mityana Municipality, fueling concerns over alleged reckless driving by a group of young motorists locally known as "Abasayika."

The crash happened in the early hours near Centenary Bank. A Toyota Mark X, registration UBN 773L, reportedly driven by Ismail Kiwewa, who is allegedly associated with the "Abasayika" group, lost control and struck pedestrians. The victims, identified as vendors from Mityana Central Market, were going about their daily activities when the accident occurred. Four other individuals sustained serious injuries and were transported to Mityana Regional Referral Hospital.

Residents expressed alarm, noting a pattern of similar reckless driving incidents in the town. Local leaders and community members have accused some members of the "Abasayika" group of frequently speeding through busy urban areas in high-end vehicles and motorcycles, disregarding traffic regulations and endangering pedestrians. The Uganda Police Force confirmed increased enforcement targeting dangerous road behavior.

Wamala regional police spokesperson SSP Lameck Kigozi stated that firm directives have been issued to curb dangerous driving and prevent further fatalities. "Road safety remains a priority. We have issued firm directives and will continue enforcing traffic regulations against anyone found driving recklessly or endangering the lives of other road users," Kigozi said. Investigations into the crash are ongoing, and appropriate action will be taken upon completion. Residents are calling for enhanced measures, including speed control systems, better signage, and increased police patrols.
