Police will not be intimidated, IG vows as force honours fallen officers

Nigeria's Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, declared that the Nigeria Police Force remains steadfast in its constitutional duty to protect lives and property. He spoke on Monday in Abuja during a memorial parade honoring 10 officers from the Special Intervention Squad (SIS) who were killed by suspected bandits in Kebbi.

The officers fought with courage and determination in defence of the people and the nation during the ensuing engagement.

Disu stated that the officers made the ultimate sacrifice during a fierce engagement with suspected bandits on August 10 in Kebbi. The officers intercepted a heavily armed group moving from Kebbi towards Zamfara. "The officers fought with courage and determination in defence of the people and the nation during the ensuing engagement," Disu said. Tragically, 10 officers lost their lives, two were injured, and two civilians also died. However, the engagement resulted in the neutralization of at least 17 suspected bandits and the destruction of four motorcycles.

"Let me assure Nigerians that the NPF remains resolute in its constitutional responsibility to protect lives and property," Disu pledged. He emphasized that the force would not be intimidated or relent, vowing to ensure the sacrifice of the fallen heroes was not in vain. The IG extended condolences to the families of the deceased officers, assuring them of the force's support.

Disu highlighted that the security of the nation comes at a cost, often borne by individuals willing to risk their lives. He urged Nigerians to remember the 10 officers and the thousands of others who make similar sacrifices. The police will continue collaborating with the armed forces, sister security agencies, state governments, and communities to combat banditry, terrorism, and other criminal activities threatening the nation. The Commissioner of Police in charge of SIS, Mr. Abayomi Shogunle, commended the fallen officers for their gallantry.
