Polish, Afghan nationals arrested in Germany after building collapse kills two Romanians

A Polish man, 27, and a 33-year-old Afghan national have been arrested in Germany on suspicion of causing a building collapse that killed three people, including two Romanian tourists. The incident occurred on May 18 in Görlitz, eastern Germany.

Authorities believe the suspects, who were allegedly searching for scrap metal and other items to steal, may have damaged or tampered with the building's interior pipes. Investigators are examining the possibility that their actions led to an explosion, which then caused the building to collapse. The suspects were reportedly seen trying to gain access to the building's interior spaces on the afternoon of the collapse.

The investigation has been complicated by the need to clear the rubble before a thorough inspection of the premises, particularly the basement areas, could be conducted. The two Romanian victims were aged 25 and 26, and the third victim was a 48-year-old man with dual German and Bulgarian citizenship. The suspects were already in pre-trial detention for unrelated investigations.
