Political dispute harmed businesses, worsened tariff situation, entrepreneurs say

Brazilian business leaders affected by tariffs imposed by the Trump administration are expressing regret over the new measures and criticizing the political disputes surrounding the issue within Brazil. Members of business associations and companies, speaking on condition of anonymity, suggest that the actions of both President Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro may have exacerbated the scenario, leaving the public to pay the price.

One business owner from a tariffed sector stated, also on condition of anonymity, that there was "bluster on both sides and a lot of recklessness" from presidential pre-candidates. The business representatives interviewed assert that Brazil should not be subservient and even advocate for the application of the Law of Reciprocity, provided it is done cautiously and more selectively.

Despite this, they believe that some of President Lula's rhetoric, such as his criticism of dollar dependency and suggestion of a BRICS currency, did not aid negotiation processes. They feel that by raising his tone, Lula spared no criticism of Trump, thereby worsening discussions with the Americans. Conversely, these business leaders also hold Flávio Bolsonaro responsible, not only for his engagement with the Trump administration during a visit to the White House but also because the initial U.S. tariffs last year were justified by the legal proceedings against former President Jair Bolsonaro.

In the assessment of the affected sectors, the politicization of the issue has worsened the situation. They believe both pre-candidates should have acted with greater maturity during the negotiation process. Nevertheless, they understand that the tariffs are unjust and lack justification, and therefore, they will continue working to reverse them.
