Pony Mile Sleeps on a Mattress: Unusual Story from a One-Room Apartment in Rovinj

A tiny resident has taken up temporary lodging in a one-bedroom apartment in Rovinj, Croatia, but it's not a typical tenant. Mile, a one-month-old miniature horse, is currently living on the fourth floor with his owners, Anđelka Josipović and Kristijan Jelenić, and their two sons, as well as their dog.

The unusual living arrangement became necessary after Mile's mother rejected him at birth and he subsequently developed a serious infection requiring surgery. Josipović explained that Mile needs to be fed milk every two hours, and to provide this intensive care, they brought him into their home. "If we are late, he wakes us up himself and reminds us it's time for a meal," she said.

Mile underwent surgery in Slovenia, with the costs partially covered by numerous donors. He is now recovering well, gaining weight, and showing a strong will to live. Josipović recalled that a veterinarian initially suggested euthanasia, but she pleaded for time, and Mile has since defied expectations.

The family operates a small ranch and children's play area in Bale, about 15 kilometers from Rovinj, where they care for llamas, pigs, horses, and sheep. Mile spends his days at the ranch but returns to the apartment in the evenings, sleeping on a mattress or the couch. While neighbors have not objected to the sight of a pony in their building, Jelenić noted that Mile currently weighs only 16 kilograms, making his presence manageable. They hope he will be strong enough to live permanently at the ranch within about twenty days.
