Pop-up summer bar in Langemark shut down early after fight and mass turnout

A planned summer bar event in Langemark, organized by the local Chiro youth group to celebrate the end of exams, was abruptly shut down hours before its scheduled closing time due to an overwhelming turnout and subsequent disturbances. The event, intended for approximately 200 people, saw an estimated 500 to 800 attendees, many traveling from the nearby city of Ypres, creating a chaotic scene.

"We were totally surprised, it was an onslaught," described some of the Chiro youth organizers. The sheer number of attendees led to people spilling into the street, causing significant disruption. The situation escalated with reports of a fight involving dozens of people and an incident where a man, described as appearing like a bodybuilder, allegedly obstructed traffic and damaged vehicles before being apprehended by police.

Mayor Lieven Vanbelleghem acknowledged the unexpected scale of the event, stating, "I can understand that when there's a mass of people, you eventually lose control." He commended the organizers for contacting the police and noted the assistance of concerned parents who helped manage traffic. The bar was officially closed around 9 p.m., despite having a permit to operate until 2 a.m.

Authorities remained on site until approximately 11 p.m. to patrol the area and prevent further incidents. The premature closure highlights the challenges of managing large, spontaneous gatherings, especially when they significantly exceed initial expectations and capacity.
