Pope calls for more efforts to stop Ebola in DR Congo

Pope Leo XIV appealed Sunday for greater international and local community involvement to combat the escalating Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Speaking after his Angelus prayer in St. Peter's Square, the pontiff expressed deep concern over the virus's spread, which has tragically claimed numerous lives.

His call comes as health officials warn of exponential growth in cases. The DRC has grappled with its most devastating Ebola outbreak, particularly in its northern and eastern regions. These areas suffer from a weak state presence, inadequate health infrastructure, and decades of violence fueled by numerous armed groups, complicating containment efforts.

In my prayers I often remember the Democratic Republic of the Congo, especially because of the spread of the Ebola epidemic, which unfortunately is causing many victims.

During his address, the Pope also extended his condolences to those mourning victims of a recent mine collapse in Zamboye, Central African Republic, where a landslide at a gold mine killed dozens. He prayed for the deceased and urged efforts to ensure the safety and legality of mining sites. Additionally, Pope Leo marked the 10th anniversary of a powerful earthquake in central Italy that resulted in approximately 300 deaths and devastated the town of Amatrice, offering prayers for the victims and their families.
