Pope Francis Urges Russia, Ukraine to Halt Civilian Attacks Amid Rising Casualties

Pope Francis has issued a fervent appeal to both Russia and Ukraine, calling for an immediate halt to attacks targeting civilians and non-military infrastructure. Speaking from St. Peter's Square during his Sunday address, the pontiff expressed deep sorrow over the escalating civilian toll in the Ukraine war.

"Tragic attacks are increasing, and with them, civilian casualties, including children," Pope Francis stated, referencing the recent surge in assaults. He reiterated his plea for both sides to respect international humanitarian law and to cease all attacks on civilian targets. The Pope's call comes amid reports of intensified aerial bombardments by both nations.

Recent weeks have seen a significant increase in civilian casualties in Ukraine, with the government reporting at least 377 deaths in the past month due to Russian attacks, the highest figure since the early stages of the war in April 2022. Ukraine's air defense systems have reportedly struggled to counter Russian ballistic missile attacks. Meanwhile, Russia has also experienced civilian casualties from drone attacks, including three children killed in a resort town on the Black Sea.
