Pope Leo XIV Expresses Sorrow for Earthquake Victims in Colombia

Pope Leo XIV has conveyed his deep sorrow following a powerful earthquake that struck Colombia, causing casualties and significant material damage. The pontiff expressed his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and offered prayers for the eternal rest of the deceased.

In a telegram sent by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, the Pope assured his spiritual closeness to all affected by the tragedy. He specifically acknowledged and expressed gratitude to all individuals engaged in search, rescue, and relief operations, commending their "generous dedication" to assisting the victims.

The earthquake, measuring 7.4 magnitude, has resulted in at least 132 deaths, hundreds of injuries, and an unknown number of missing persons. Numerous buildings have collapsed, and critical infrastructure, including hospitals, airports, public services, and transportation systems, has sustained severe damage, particularly in the central and western regions of the country.
