Pope Leo XIV to hold Mass for millions in Lima on November 16

Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to celebrate a large Mass in Lima, Peru, on November 16, Foreign Minister Carlos Espa announced. The event will take place at the Las Palmas Air Base in the Santiago de Surco district.

This Mass is planned as the pontiff's final engagement in Peru during his visit, which is set to begin on November 11. The Pope is also scheduled to visit Chiclayo, Cusco, and Pucallpa before the Lima Mass.

Foreign Minister Espa anticipates that the Lima event could attract between two and two and a half million people. He suggested this could potentially double the attendance of Pope Francis's visit in 2018, which drew an estimated one and a half million people.

Due to high temperatures expected from the El Niño phenomenon, the Mass might be held in the early morning hours. "We have to do it as early as possible so that there isn't so much heat because we will be in the middle of the El Niño phenomenon," Espa stated.

Peruvian authorities are working to ensure comprehensive security and comfort for attendees. Following his visit to Peru, Pope Leo XIV will continue his apostolic journey to Uruguay and Argentina.
