Popocatépetl Volcano Records 55 Emissions in 24 Hours; Remains on Yellow Alert Phase 2

Mexico's Popocatépetl volcano has shown consistent activity, registering 55 emissions in the past 24 hours, according to the National Center for Disaster Prevention (Cenapred). These emissions consisted of water vapor, volcanic gases, and, in some instances, small amounts of ash.

The volcano's alert level remains at Yellow Phase 2, signaling moderate volcanic activity. This phase allows for continuous monitoring and indicates that explosions of minor to moderate size, tremors, and ashfall in nearby communities are possible. Cenapred noted that the observed activity aligns with the expected behavior for the current alert phase.

Authorities are maintaining a permanent monitoring system in coordination with the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). While the alert level has not changed, residents and authorities are reminded of the potential hazards. Cenapred reiterated recommendations, including respecting the 12-kilometer exclusion zone around the crater, protecting respiratory systems from ashfall, and staying clear of ravannas during heavy rains due to the risk of mudflows.

Occasional ash emissions have been observed, dispersing to the west-northwest depending on wind conditions. The potential for incandescent fragment ejections within the exclusion zone and pyroclastic flows that do not reach populated areas also exists. Residents are urged to rely solely on official information from Cenapred and the National Civil Protection Coordination to avoid rumors.
