Port of Chancay marks one year, boosting Peru-China trade

Peru's Port of Chancay is celebrating its first year of commercial operations, establishing itself as a critical logistics center in Latin America. The terminal has significantly boosted trade between Peru, China, and the broader Asia-Pacific market.

During its inaugural year, the port has handled over 500,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) and facilitated imports and exports valued at $3.6 billion. Chinese Ambassador to Peru, Song Yang, highlighted the port's success, noting it has opened three main shipping routes and four feeder routes connecting to major Chinese ports, as well as ports in Colombia, Ecuador, Chile, and Panama.

The port is lauded as Latin America's most modern, integrating advanced technologies such as 5G, automated gantry and yard cranes, automated container trucks, digital twins, and intelligent energy management systems. This high level of automation allows for 24-hour supervision and intelligent operational programming, enhancing efficiency and safety.

As the first major smart port in South America, Port of Chancay integrates intelligence and security concepts from the beginning of its planning. With 5G technology, automated gantry cranes and yard cranes, automated container trucks, digital twins, and intelligent energy management systems, 24-hour supervision, intelligent operation scheduling, and unmanned operation are possible, significantly improving operational efficiency, safety standards, and emergency response capabilities.

Ambassador Song Yang emphasized that while operated by a Chinese company, Chancay is a Peruvian port under the supervision of Peruvian authorities. He assured that smart devices and joint control mechanisms ensure effective commercial security and prevent illicit activities, noting the absence of direct routes to the United States and Europe.

The port's development not only strengthens commercial ties but also generates significant tax revenue and promotes Peruvian agricultural exports, marking a key milestone in regional integration.
