Portugal sends 200 firefighters to support Spain's efforts against Ávila wildfires

Portugal has sent a contingent of 200 firefighters to the Spanish province of Ávila to aid in combating ongoing forest fires. This deployment is activated under a bilateral protocol for mutual assistance in Civil Protection matters between Portugal and Spain.

The firefighting force departed from Guarda, central Portugal, and comprises members from the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC), volunteer fire corps, and the Republican National Guard (GNR). The Portuguese Army is providing logistical support, including 500 combat rations for the contingent.

Commander Mário Silvestre stated that the team was prepared to assist, emphasizing the spirit of cooperation characteristic of joint operations between the two nations. "We are prepared to support in whatever is necessary," he affirmed, noting that the Portuguese firefighters will adapt to the operational needs determined by Spanish authorities upon arrival.

Silvestre highlighted the regular coordination between Portuguese and Spanish firefighters during fire campaigns, citing a strong "camaraderie" that facilitates integration. The contingent is structured as a company with combat groups and support units, aligning with Spain's request for international missions. Meanwhile, Portugal itself remains on high alert for fire risks, with 50 municipalities in the north and center facing maximum risk due to high temperatures, low humidity, and wind.
