The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has officially terminated the contract of national team coach Roberto Martinez, following the team's exit from the 2026 World Cup. Martinez had previously announced his resignation from the position he held since January 2023.

The FPF confirmed the end of the contractual relationship with Martinez and his coaching staff on Wednesday, July 8, 2026. Portugal's World Cup journey concluded in the round of 16 after a narrow 0-1 defeat to Spain. This outcome fell short of the federation's and Martinez's aspirations.

With this, the Portuguese Football Federation announces that it has officially ended the contractual relationship with national team coach Roberto Martinez and his coaching staff on Wednesday.

Following the match against Spain, Martinez, 52, stated his decision to step down, explaining his rationale. "I came to Portugal with the goal of winning the World Cup. Because I failed to achieve it, it makes no sense for me to continue coaching. My contract ends today," he declared.

During his tenure, Martinez led Portugal to victory in the 2025 UEFA Nations League. However, his campaign in Euro 2024 ended in the quarterfinals, where the team was eliminated by France in a penalty shootout. The FPF will now begin the process of searching for a new head coach to lead the Selecao.
