Positive Surprise: Estonia's European Athletics Team Grows to 20 Members

Estonia's contingent for the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham has impressively expanded to 20 athletes, marking a significant boost for the nation's track and field prospects. The team includes the sole reigning European champion, decathlete Johannes Erm, who automatically qualified as a title defender.

Beyond Erm, several other Estonian athletes achieved direct qualification by meeting the required standards. These included fellow decathletes Karel Tilga and Rasmus Roosleht, pole vaulter Marleen Mülla, and javelin thrower Gedly Tugi. Their performances secured them automatic berths in their respective disciplines.

The largest portion of the Estonian team, however, earned their places through the world rankings and rating systems. This diverse group spans various disciplines, featuring sprinters Ann Marii Kivikas and Henri Sai, marathon runners Liis-Grete Hussar, Karel Hussar, and Tiidrek Nurme, hurdler Laura Maasik, 400m hurdler Viola Hambidge, and high jumper Karmen Bruus.

Estonia boasts a particularly strong presence in the technical events. In the pole vault, Marleen Mülla is joined by Allika Inkeri Moser, Robert Kompus, and Henri Apri. Long jumper Liisa-Maria Lusti, triple jumper Viktor Morozov, and hammer thrower Adam Kelly will also represent the country. The decathlon event will see a remarkable four Estonian athletes competing: Johannes Erm, Karel Tilga, Rasmus Roosleht, and Risto Lillemets, highlighting the nation's depth in this demanding discipline. The European Athletics Championships are scheduled to take place in Birmingham from August 10-16.
