Post-Contamination Scandal Poll: KMT's Lee Chih-tsai Leads New Taipei Mayor Race, Stronger Among Women Than Su Chiao-hui

A recent poll released by the New Taipei City Council's Kuomintang (KMT) caucus indicates that Lee Chih-tsai is maintaining a lead in the race for New Taipei mayor. The survey, conducted between July 20-23, shows Lee with 43.7% support, compared to 36.8% for his opponent Su Chiao-hui, widening his lead from 6.2% in June to 6.9%.

The poll highlights a strengthening of Lee's support base, particularly among women and swing voters. His support among female voters stands at 41.7%, surpassing Su's 36.6%. Lee has also garnered higher favorability ratings in overall public perception, with an average score of 6 out of 10 compared to Su's 5.1.

The latest poll shows that 81% of the public tend to vote, and the willingness of swing voters has increased by 9%, likely influenced by the food safety incident.

Furthermore, the survey suggests Lee is perceived as more capable of implementing his policies, with 34.2% of respondents favoring him on this metric, versus 29.3% for Su. This perception is particularly strong among supporters of the Taiwan People's Party (TPP) and independent voters, indicating Lee's appeal extends beyond traditional KMT supporters.

Lee Chih-tsai's support among women is 41.7%, leading Su Chiao-hui's 36.6%. In addition to the impact of the food safety storm, Lee Chih-tsai recently proposed policies favored by female voters, such as women, children, animal protection, all-age dental care, local development, and cultural policies, which have clearly gained recognition from female voters.

An additional factor cited for Lee's potential success is the high approval rating of the current mayor, Hou Yu-ih, who enjoys a 67.6% satisfaction rate. The KMT caucus believes Hou's popularity, which transcends party lines, age groups, and educational backgrounds, will provide crucial support for Lee's campaign.

The poll involved 1,303 valid samples from New Taipei citizens aged 20 and above, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points at a 95% confidence level. The survey was conducted using random digit dialing via landlines and weighted according to demographic data.
