Chiang Wan-an praises Chen Chi-mai as potential premier, calls it 'praise killing'

Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an has praised Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai as a strong candidate for premier, suggesting Chen would be a suitable choice for the top cabinet position. Chiang's remarks were made during an interview on July 29, following the ongoing controversy surrounding a toxic oil scandal.

Chiang stated that Premier Cho Jung-tai should bear political responsibility for the entire incident. He added that if President Lai Ching-te were to reshuffle the cabinet, Chen Chi-mai would be an excellent choice due to his high approval ratings. Chiang specifically commended Chen for his courage in speaking up for Kaohsiung citizens during the toxic oil scandal, prioritizing their health and food safety with a firm stance.

"This is very difficult, and I admire it," Chiang said. "Therefore, I believe he would be a suitable candidate for the next cabinet formation." Chiang's comments were interpreted by some as an attempt to put pressure on Chen, a tactic known as "praise killing" or "捧殺" (pěng shā) in Chinese, which involves excessive praise that can lead to negative consequences.

Chiang made these remarks at a press conference introducing red pandas in Shanghai. He also addressed criticism from Overseas Community Affairs Council Minister Hsu Chia-ching, who had questioned his involvement in national legislative matters. Chiang retorted that Hsu's statements were "boomerang" remarks, implying they could backfire.

Earlier, Chiang had called for a vote of no confidence against the current administration, a move criticized by Hsu as overstepping his authority as Taipei mayor. Chiang defended his position by stating that Chen Chi-mai's willingness to prioritize citizens' health and safety demonstrated strong leadership qualities essential for a higher office.
