Power is temporary, character endures, says ex-Governor Jang at 80th birthday

Senator Jonah Jang, a former Governor of Plateau State, marked his 80th birthday by delivering a message to Nigeria's political class and citizens. He emphasized that political power is fleeting and that true enduring values are character, faith, and service to humanity.

As I look back over these eighty years, I have come to appreciate one enduring truth: positions come and go; power is temporary; fame fades; wealth cannot satisfy the deepest longings of the human heart. What remains is character, faith, service to humanity and our relationship with God.

Speaking in Jos at an event celebrating his milestone birthday and the launch of his autobiography, "From Airman to Politics," Jang reflected on his eight decades of life, military service, and political career. He shared that his experiences have taught him that integrity and one's relationship with God should always take precedence over the pursuit of power, fame, and wealth. "Positions come and go; power is temporary; fame fades; wealth cannot satisfy the deepest longings of the human heart," Jang stated. "What remains is character, faith, service to humanity and our relationship with God."

He urged politicians and public office holders to focus on building a legacy of integrity and selfless service, rather than becoming consumed by the quest for political office and material possessions. Addressing young Nigerians, Jang encouraged them to embrace faith, stressing that worldly success alone cannot guarantee fulfillment. "Life is far greater than political office, wealth or recognition. All these things will one day pass away. Our ultimate goal should be to spend eternity with Christ. That is the greatest achievement any human being can ever attain," he said.

Jang also explained that his autobiography was written to document his experiences accurately and to address misconceptions surrounding his decisions. He stated that the book is not intended to settle scores or attack anyone but rather to provide context and explain the circumstances behind his actions. He expressed gratitude to former military President General Ibrahim Babangida for appointing him Military Governor of Benue and Gongola states, acknowledging the role this played in shaping his public service career.

Some were based on incomplete information, while others created misconceptions and controversies that continue even while I am still alive. This book is not written to settle scores or attack anyone. Rather, it is an honest effort to place events in their proper context, explain the circumstances under which certain decisions were taken and present the facts as I experienced them.
