Powerful 7.4 Magnitude Earthquake Devastates Colombia; Casualties Reported

A powerful and destructive earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 struck Colombia, leaving a trail of devastation. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the significant seismic event, which occurred at a depth of over 100 kilometers. The epicenter was identified just 5 kilometers east of the small town of San Jose del Palmar, located in the western Choco department.

Nubia Carolina Cordoba-Curiel, the governor of the Choco department, expressed deep concern over the aftermath, reporting casualties and severe damage to buildings. She noted that while the epicenter was near San Jose del Palmar, the departmental capital, Quibdo, also suffered injuries and substantial structural damage. The seismic activity was so intense that it damaged the cathedral basilica in the city of Manizales. The tremors were felt across various Colombian cities, including the capital, Bogota.

Despite the earthquake's intensity, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration stated that there is no tsunami threat. However, the human toll is significant. Radio station BluRadio reported that at least 132 people have died and 570 others have been injured. The destruction is extensive, with over 60 buildings reported destroyed. In response to the crisis, the Colombian authorities have declared a national state of disaster, mobilizing resources to address the emergency and aid affected populations.
