Prabowo Subianto discusses police law revision, focusing on retirement age

President Prabowo Subianto chaired a meeting on June 1, 2026, to deliberate proposed revisions to the Indonesian National Police Law. The discussion centered on adjusting the retirement age for police personnel, a topic where the government and the House of Representatives have presented differing proposals.

During the meeting at the State Palace, attended by Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas, State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, DPR Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, and Deputy Law Minister Edward Omar Sharif Hiariej, President Prabowo sought clarification on the proposed changes. A key point of discussion was the retirement age, with the government team proposing an extension to 59 for enlisted and non-commissioned officers, and 60 for commissioned officers.

In contrast, the House of Representatives has put forward a proposal to set the retirement age at 60 for all police personnel, from enlisted ranks up to three-star generals. Four-star generals would be permitted to retire at 63. These proposed ages significantly exceed the current retirement limit of 58 stipulated in the 2002 Police Law.

DPR Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, who also serves as Executive Chair of the Gerindra Party, highlighted the need for clarification on these differing proposals, emphasizing the government's and the House's distinct positions on the matter.
