Prada Designs Advanced Inner Layer for Astronauts' Lunar Spacesuits

Italian luxury brand Prada has partnered with Axiom Space to create an advanced inner layer for spacesuits intended for NASA's upcoming Artemis lunar missions. The newly unveiled component, known as the Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment (LCVG), is designed to be worn directly by astronauts beneath their primary spacesuits.

The LCVG's primary function is to manage astronaut body temperature during extravehicular activities on the Moon's surface. Utilizing a network of tubes circulating cool water, it efficiently removes heat generated by the astronauts, preventing overheating during missions that can last up to eight hours. Additionally, the garment incorporates a ventilation system that supplies fresh oxygen to the face area and removes exhaled carbon dioxide, ensuring a breathable and comfortable environment.

This collaboration builds upon the partnership announced in 2023, combining Prada's renowned expertise in high-performance materials and technical design with Axiom Space's specialization in human spaceflight technology. The LCVG represents a critical advancement, focusing on the astronaut's direct comfort and thermal regulation, essential for the success of long-duration lunar exploration.

The Artemis program aims to return humans to the Moon, with the Artemis III mission notably slated to include the first woman and the first person of color on the lunar surface. The development of sophisticated equipment like the LCVG is crucial for achieving these ambitious goals, marking a significant step in human space exploration since the Apollo era.
