Prague Zoo animals beat the heat with ice treats

As Prague endures its second heatwave of the summer, with temperatures soaring to 41.5 degrees Celsius, zoo animals are finding creative ways to stay cool. The Prague Zoo has implemented special measures to help its inhabitants cope with the extreme heat, including providing icy treats to its polar bears and gorillas.

The zoo's twin polar bears, Gregor and Aleut, are consuming large quantities of ice, reportedly up to three tons per day. Their icy meals are enriched with fruits and fish, such as apples, carrots, mackerel, and salmon, offering both refreshment and nutrition. This daily intake helps them manage the intense heat and stay comfortable.

Meanwhile, the gorillas have their own unique method for enjoying the frozen treats. They receive their ice, which is also prepared with added nutrients, lowered down to their enclosure using a pulley system. This ensures they can access the cooling ice in a way that suits their environment and behavior.

The current heatwave is particularly severe, with temperatures approaching record levels for the city. The zoo's efforts to provide relief to its animals highlight the challenges of maintaining animal welfare during extreme weather conditions and the innovative solutions employed by zoological institutions.
