Prediction: Victory over Palestine would keep Vietnam’s U20 Asian Cup hopes alive

Vietnam’s U20 team faces Palestine in a match it is widely expected to win, but a defeat would likely end its hopes of reaching the 2027 AFC U20 Asian Cup finals. Both teams lost their opening Group C fixtures and remain without a point.

Vietnam fell 3-0 to North Korea, exposing problems in physical contests, links between the lines and defensive organization. The team also lost Nguyễn Lê Phát, who returned to Ninh Bình and cannot play in the remaining two matches. Palestine lost 2-1 to leading contender Iran, but showed enough physical strength to remain a difficult opponent.

Palestine’s defense, however, often failed to maintain its shape against Iran and allowed the opposition to create several chances. The preview identified spaces that fast Vietnamese players such as Trần Gia Bảo, Hoàng Công Hậu and Nguyễn Văn Bách could exploit if Vietnam moves the ball more quickly.

Vietnam also has home advantage at Việt Trì. Footy Stats rated its chances of victory at 63%, compared with 22% for Palestine and about 17% for a draw. The model put the probability of more than 2.5 goals at 72%.

The prediction called for Vietnam to lead 1-0 at halftime and win 3-1. Three points would give the team momentum before its final group match against Iran on September 6. The qualifying tournament runs from August 31 to September 6, with 32 teams divided into eight groups. The eight group winners and the seven best runners-up will join host China at the finals.
