Premature baby dies in German hospital; prosecutors investigate circumstances

Prosecutors in Paderborn, Germany, have launched a death investigation following the death of a premature baby in the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit. The infant died on Tuesday after developing severe sepsis, reportedly linked to an infection with the Enterobacter bacterium. The St. Louise Children's Hospital, part of the St. Vincenz Klinik group, confirmed that the bacterium was detected in four infants. While two developed sepsis, the deceased premature baby succumbed despite intensive medical care. The condition of the other critically ill infant has since stabilized. The hospital stated that the two remaining infants with the bacterium showed no symptoms of illness. An autopsy has been performed on the deceased baby, and extensive microbiological tests are underway to determine if the bacterium was the cause of death. Prosecutors are awaiting initial results from forensic medicine and the health department in approximately two weeks. The hospital has intensified hygiene measures and is limiting admissions to emergencies while investigating potential sources and transmission routes of the bacteria.
