Premier League clubs spend a record €3.8 billion on transfers

The Premier League has shattered its transfer spending record, committing €3.8 billion during the summer window in a market packed with deals worth more than €100 million.

Manchester City spent the most, laying out €450 million while collecting €340 million in sales. The club has rebuilt its squad after the departures of Bernardo Silva, John Stones, Rodri, Manuel Akanji, Savinho, Omar Marmoush and James Trafford. The spending comes after City won only two cups in the past two years and as it prepares for life after Pep Guardiola, with a squad intended for Enzo Maresca.

Enzo Fernández, signed for €145 million, and Elliot Anderson, for €138 million, head City's arrivals. Ayyoub Bouaddi cost €96 million and Iliman Ndiaye €75 million. The aim is to close the gap with Arsenal, which has the league's most complete squad but still spent €220 million. Arsenal added Bruno Guimarães for €87 million, Ezri Konsa for €64 million and Christos Tzolis for €40 million. Piero Hincapié also joined permanently for €40 million. The club's biggest sale came when Al Hilal paid €65 million for Martinelli.

Chelsea and Tottenham also spent heavily. Tottenham committed €350 million, plus a mandatory €70 million purchase of Omar Marmoush due next summer. Sandro Tonali, Savinho and Mateus Fernandes each cost €100 million or more, while Jan Paul van Hecke cost €60 million. The signings are intended to give Roberto De Zerbi the tools to revive a side that finished 17th in the league for two straight seasons and opened the campaign with two heavy defeats. Chelsea paid €136 million for Morgan Rogers and strengthened elsewhere with Maxence Lacroix, Marco Palestra, Pep Chavarría and Emiliano Martínez. The club also raised more than €400 million through sales as it seeks to meet financial fair-play requirements after previous fines from the Premier League, the FA and UEFA.
