Premier League clubs splash a record £3.46 billion on players

Money poured into the English Premier League again this summer, pushing transfer spending to a record £3.46 billion, or about $4.67 billion. The record improved for a second straight summer. Last year, spending crossed £3 billion for the first time, compared with £1.13 billion five years ago.

Clubs continued spending until the final hours of the summer transfer window. Manchester City completed the biggest reported deal, paying Chelsea £125 million for Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernández. City also signed Elliot Anderson for £116 million.

Chelsea paid £117 million for Morgan Rogers, while Liverpool agreed to pay Paris Saint-Germain at least £107 million for Bradley Barcola. Add-ons could take Barcola’s transfer fee to £123 million. Tottenham also broke its club record and could pay up to £100 million for Sandro Tonali.

Four of the 11 most expensive purchases in Premier League history came this summer. Manchester City led overall spending at £458 million, followed by Chelsea with £349 million and Tottenham with £303 million. Newly promoted teams also spent heavily: Transfermarkt data showed Ipswich, Coventry City and Hull City together spent more than £400 million. About 38% of transfers took place between Premier League clubs, up from 30% last summer. The new 2026-27 season began on August 21.
