President appoints Cho Yong-beom as new Vice Minister of Planning and Budget

President Lee Jae-myung has appointed Cho Yong-beom, previously the head of the Budget Office, as the new Vice Minister of Planning and Budget. The appointment was announced on July 20.

Presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jeong stated in a written briefing that the new Vice Minister Cho is a leading expert in budget and finance, having held crucial positions within the ministry. Kang highlighted Cho's contributions to the economy, including the swift passage of a supplementary budget to overcome the Middle East war crisis in the first half of the year and exceeding fiscal execution targets, which helped stabilize livelihoods and boost economic recovery.

"Based on his expertise in budget and finance, he is expected to establish mid-to-long-term national development strategies and support South Korea's great leap forward through investments in future-oriented areas such as artificial intelligence (AI)," Kang added.

Vice Minister Cho began his public service career in 1995 after passing the Higher Civil Service Examination. He is known for his extensive experience in budget and finance, having served as the Budget Review Coordination Officer, Spokesperson, and Head of the Budget Division at the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
