President Approves Top Military Honor for New Strategic Command Chief

President Asif Ali Zardari has approved the conferral of the Nishan-i-Imtiaz (Military) on General Syed Aamer Raza, the Commander of the National Strategic Command. This prestigious military award recognizes General Raza's service and leadership in a newly established and critical role within Pakistan's defense architecture.

General Raza's appointment as the first Commander of the National Strategic Command marks a significant step in the restructuring of Pakistan's higher military command. This new four-star office is designed to integrate the nation's strategic forces under a unified operational headquarters, bringing together the Army, Navy, and Air Force strategic commands. The creation of this command was facilitated by the 27th Constitutional Amendment, enacted last year.

The constitutional changes also led to the abolition of the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and the establishment of the Chief of Defence Forces position, which is now held by Field Marshal Asim Munir. The Commander of the National Strategic Command is appointed by the prime minister upon the recommendation of the Chief of Defence Forces, serving a three-year term. While this new command structure unifies operational control, the National Command Authority, chaired by the prime minister, retains ultimate authority over nuclear policy and its employment.

Before his current role, General Raza served as Chief of General Staff, overseeing the implementation of organizational changes and restructuring efforts. His career includes commanding various units and holding significant appointments, including Heavy Industries Taxila and Director General Weapons and Equipment. He has also been awarded the Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Military) and Sitara-i-Basalat.
