President-elect's team denounces armed groups' plot to assassinate him in Colombia

Security forces for Colombia's president-elect, Abelardo de la Espriella, have revealed an alleged assassination plot by illegal armed groups. Intelligence reports indicate the ELN and FARC dissidents are offering up to $900,000 to finance an attack before his inauguration on August 7.

The campaign's official statement details that the threat involves potential infiltration of press conferences and public events. The goal is to carry out a violent act, exploiting the presence of civilians.

Despite the serious nature of the threats, de la Espriella stated he will not suspend his work agenda or planned regional events. He believes the country should not yield to intimidation from outlawed structures. His team has requested an urgent investigation by police and judicial authorities to identify those responsible and neutralize any risks.

The announcement comes less than three weeks before the transfer of power, amid high political tension and escalating violence in the country. De la Espriella, who has pledged a hardline policy against criminal organizations and to dismantle the outgoing government's peace negotiations, assumes office in a critical security scenario. This follows the precedent of last year's assassination of opposition pre-candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay.
