President Inspects Kaohsiung Flood Control; Lawmaker Stresses Resilience

President Lai Ching-te inspected flood control facilities in northern Kaohsiung on August 25, 2026, accompanied by local officials including Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai and Legislator Lai Jui-lung. The visit focused on understanding local needs and reinforcing the region's defenses against extreme weather.

Legislator Lai Jui-lung stressed that flood control is an ongoing effort, particularly in the face of climate change. He called for closer cooperation between the central government and local authorities to enhance the flood resilience of the greater Kaohsiung area. During the inspection in Gangshan and Yong'an districts, Lai highlighted the interconnectedness of northern Kaohsiung's water systems and the need for integrated watershed planning.

Lai urged the central government to support Kaohsiung's efforts to increase flood detention facilities, upgrade pumping stations, reinforce embankments, and improve drainage channels. He expressed gratitude for President Lai's support and Mayor Chen's administration's execution of flood control projects.

In addition to flood control, Lai Jui-lung is also advocating for financial assistance for the local fishing industry. Following the successful inclusion of all agricultural products in Kaohsiung under natural disaster cash relief and low-interest loan programs, he is now pushing for similar relief measures for fishermen. Lai aims to expedite the process under principles of "leniency, optimality, speed, and simplicity" to help affected fishermen resume production quickly.

Lai stated that his recent visits to various areas have provided him with a clear understanding of the water situation. He pledged to work closely with central and city government agencies to translate local needs into concrete infrastructure projects, addressing drainage bottlenecks and safeguarding citizens' safety. The collaborative effort between national and local governments aims to bolster flood resilience across Kaohsiung.
