President Kast Appoints María Paz Ríos as New Undersecretary of Sports

Chilean President José Antonio Kast has named María Paz Ríos, a distinguished lawyer and accomplished athlete, as the nation's new undersecretary of Sports. Ríos, who has represented the country as part of Team Chile, brings a wealth of experience from over two decades in high-performance athletics, specializing in the javelin throw.

Her athletic achievements include holding the national record in javelin and competing in the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. Beyond her athletic career, Ríos is a lawyer who has also pursued advanced studies. She completed coursework in Artificial Intelligence applied to the legal field at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2025 and is currently enrolled in a diploma program on Personal Data Protection at the Catholic University of Chile.

Ríos succeeds Andrés Otero, who resigned on August 13 following a controversy that also led to the departure of Nata. Her appointment signifies a blend of sports expertise and legal acumen within the government's sports administration.
