President Lee Calls for Swift OPCON Transfer, Accelerating Nuclear Submarine Acquisition

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has urged for the rapid and smooth transfer of wartime operational control (OPCON) from the United States, emphasizing it as a crucial step for the healthy development of the ROK-U.S. alliance. Speaking at a joint State Council and emergency economic inspection meeting, Lee stated that a strong national defense is the bedrock for South Korea's ascent as a global economic powerhouse.

"Our security must be firmly protected by ourselves," Lee declared, stressing that a self-reliant defense posture is essential for earning respect from allies and maintaining a robust alliance. He argued that South Korea already possesses sufficient capabilities to defend itself but must further bolster its military strength in the face of a harsh international reality characterized by self-interest and the law of the jungle.

Efforts to localize key defense components and strengthen public-private cooperation in the defense industry were also prioritized.
