President Lee: Designate Dec. 3 as 'National Sovereignty Day' to pass on its meaning

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung announced on July 17th his intention to designate December 3rd as 'National Sovereignty Day.' The president stated that this new national holiday would serve to ensure the meaning and spirit of national sovereignty are passed down to future generations.

The emergency martial law declared on the midnight of December 3, 2024, reminded us all that the threat to democracy is not a thing of the past but a reality that can be repeated anytime in today's South Korea.

In a statement posted on Facebook, President Lee reflected on the values of national sovereignty, freedom, and democracy, as declared in the constitution, particularly in light of Constitution Day. He highlighted a past event, the "emergency martial law" declared on December 3, 2024, as a stark reminder that threats to democracy are not confined to the past but remain a present reality in South Korea.

President Lee credited the "great Korean people" for demonstrating through a "revolution of light" that the spirit of national sovereignty, enshrined in the constitution, is alive and actively practiced. He affirmed that his administration, the "National Sovereignty Government," is committed to remembering and continuing this significant historical narrative.
