President Lee: Punishing betrayal is key to just integration; pro-Japanese assets to be reclaimed

President Lee Jae-myung declared on the 71st anniversary of Memorial Day that punishing those who betray the community is a vital duty for the living, on par with honoring those who defended the nation. Speaking at the National Seoul현충원 (Hyunchungwon), Lee stated that "just integration for the community's continuity and development is possible when we honor devotion and punish betrayal."

Lee referenced the recently enacted law on the restitution of pro-Japanese collaborator assets, which took effect on June 2. He pledged to investigate and reclaim assets unjustly accumulated by pro-Japanese collaborators, holding them accountable and setting a precedent to prevent recurrence. He highlighted the sacrifices of independence activists, patriotic martyrs, and democratic citizens, asserting that South Korea's current standing is impossible without their contributions.

"Honoring the spirits of our ancestors and providing them with due respect is a historical and social obligation for us who are alive," Lee said. He stressed that "special sacrifices for all must be met with commensurate special compensation and respect." Lee noted the progress in expanding compensation for bereaved families of independence patriots, providing living support for spouses of veterans, and establishing a comprehensive 보훈 (Bohun - veteran welfare) medical system.

He also promised to strengthen respect for "citizens in uniform," including military personnel, firefighters, police officers, and coast guards, whose dedication ensures the public's daily safety. Lee committed to improving support systems for injured soldiers, ensuring they receive veteran status upon discharge. He also mentioned the expansion of family allowances to all recipients of disability benefits for military injuries, including those classified as Grade 7.

Reflecting on past national crises, Lee expressed confidence in the Korean people's resilience to overcome current challenges, including the impact of Middle Eastern conflicts on the economy and daily life. He envisioned a future of peace, prosperity, and shared well-being, stating that building such a proud nation is the true way to honor the sacrifices of past generations.
