President Lee Welcomes Japanese PM Takaichi with State-Level Protocol

President Lee Jae-myung extended a warm and formal welcome to Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who arrived in South Korea for a two-day summit in Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-do. The reception at a hotel in Andong was meticulously arranged, featuring an honor guard, signifying a level of courtesy typically reserved for state visits. This gesture underscores the importance South Korea places on strengthening bilateral ties with Japan and reflects a spirit of reciprocity in diplomatic engagements.

The elaborate welcome was a direct response to the exceptional hospitality Prime Minister Takaichi showed President Lee during his visit to Nara Prefecture in January. At that time, Takaichi broke with convention by personally greeting President Lee and his delegation at their accommodation, an act that was deeply appreciated and noted by the South Korean side. The current summit's protocol aims to mirror that warmth and respect, fostering a positive atmosphere for substantive discussions.

The summit agenda is comprehensive, encompassing both closed-door and expanded sessions, followed by a joint press conference. A state dinner is planned, showcasing a fusion of traditional Korean cuisine, specifically dishes inspired by the ancient cookbook 'Sowoonjabang' from the Andong region, paired with local traditional liquors like 'Tae-sa-ju' and premium 'Andong Soju.' The evening's cultural program includes a piano performance by renowned Korean-Japanese pianist Yang Bang-ean, followed by a piano, violin, and cello trio. This cultural diplomacy aims to deepen mutual understanding and appreciation between the two nations.

Following the dinner, the leaders will proceed to the Hahoe Village ferry landing for a special cultural presentation: the traditional 'Seonyu Julbulnori' (fireworks and boat performance) and a pansori performance titled 'Like Scattered Sparks.' This unique experience is curated specifically for Prime Minister Takaichi, offering a glimpse into Korea's rich cultural heritage. The summit signifies a concerted effort by both nations to build on recent diplomatic progress and explore avenues for future cooperation.
