President Moon to meet Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi for talks on bilateral relations and Korean Peninsula stability

South Korean President Moon Jae-in is set to meet with Chinese Foreign Minister and Director of the Office of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission, Wang Yi, on August 20. The meeting, to be held at the presidential office, will cover the future direction of South Korea-China relations and regional affairs, including the situation on the Korean Peninsula. President Moon will also convey his regards to Chinese President Xi Jinping.

During the visit, which spans August 19-20, National Security Advisor Chung Eui-yong will also hold separate talks and a luncheon with Minister Wang. These discussions are expected to involve a broad exchange of views on issues of mutual interest, encompassing bilateral ties, the Korean Peninsula's stability, and other regional and international matters.

The meeting gains significance in light of President Moon's recent proposal for multilateral talks aimed at ending the Korean War. In his Liberation Day address, Moon called for parties involved to cease mutual threats and initiate discussions to conclude the long-standing conflict. This initiative aligns with recent signals from the U.S., where President Donald Trump has indicated a potential for dialogue with North Korea by ordering a significant reduction in joint military exercises.

Given these developments, President Moon is expected to seek China's role in facilitating a transition towards a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula during his meeting with Minister Wang. China's engagement is considered crucial for advancing inter-Korean relations and achieving lasting peace in the region.
