President Peña confirms Estefanía Laterza as Paraguay’s ambassador to the United States

Santiago Peña has signed the decree confirming Estefanía Laterza de los Ríos as Paraguay’s ambassador to the United States, moving the career diplomat’s appointment to its next stage.

Decree No. 6694, dated Aug. 31, names Laterza extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador to the United States and issues her letter of credence. She is expected to take the oath and then travel to Washington, where she will present her credentials to President Donald Trump.

The Senate gave its constitutional approval last week in a unanimous vote of 29-0. During the legislative debate, Antonio Barrios, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said Laterza would work on the program she presented and continue initiatives launched by her predecessor, Gustavo Leite, especially efforts to attract investment that could improve Paraguay’s economic situation.

Several senators highlighted Laterza’s technical background, career at the Foreign Ministry, public service and multilateral experience. Yolanda Paredes, Celeste Amarilla and Rafael Filizzola also praised the résumé of the candidate to lead Paraguay’s diplomatic mission under the Trump administration.

Before the Senate vote, the Foreign Relations Committee received Laterza so she could present her work program and outline the main priorities she plans to pursue in the United States. She said Paraguay and the United States have historically maintained excellent relations and argued that their bilateral ties are currently experiencing a “golden moment,” based on shared values, a common roadmap, a results-oriented approach, benefits for Paraguay and regional relevance.
