President's son Kaesang Pangarep to contest 'hellish' Central Java V legislative seat

Kaesang Pangarep, the youngest son of Indonesian President Joko Widodo and chairman of the Solidary Party of Indonesia (PSI), has declared his intention to run for a seat in the Central Java V electoral district in the upcoming 2029 legislative elections.

This announcement sets the stage for a highly competitive race in what is being dubbed a "hellish" electoral district. Central Java V encompasses the Surakarta residency areas, including Solo, Boyolali, Klaten, and Sukoharjo. For the past two terms, the district has been represented by Puan Maharani, the Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives and daughter of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) chairwoman. In the 2024 elections, Maharani secured a significant 297,366 votes, placing her third nationally among legislative candidates.

I was actually going to Solo just for Persis Solo, but it happened to coincide with the DPD City of Solo Coordination Meeting, so why not announce that I will be a legislative candidate here.

The district is allocated eight seats in the legislature. Beyond Maharani, Central Java V is home to several long-serving legislators, including Aria Bima of PDIP, who has served five terms since 2004, and Rahmad Handoyo, who is in his third term. Other incumbents include Adik Sasongko (Gerindra), Singgih Januratmoko (Golkar), Abdul Kharis Almasyhari (PKS), Muhammad Hatta (PAN), and Mohammad Toha (PKB).

Pangarep's entry into this already fiercely contested district, often referred to as "kandang Banteng" (the Bull's pen) due to PDIP's dominance, is expected to intensify the competition. Singgih Januratmoko acknowledged that the 2029 elections will be significantly tougher with Kaesang's participation, adding another layer of star power to a district already featuring Puan Maharani.
