PRI gains strength in Coahuila elections; Morena faces negative opinion

The PRI party emerged as a significant force in Mexico's political landscape following the recent legislative elections in Coahuila. The party secured a decisive victory, winning two out of every three seats in the state congress. This outcome has been framed as a major win for the PRI, allowing it to regain a degree of influence in setting the media agenda, a position it had not held in some time.

The PRI was left with the dominant theme of the month: a two-to-one victory in the Coahuila Congress that Morena tried to discredit with accusations of vote-buying.

However, the elections were not without controversy. Morena, the ruling party, attempted to discredit the PRI's win by leveling accusations of vote-buying. This electoral "hangover" also resulted in three parties losing their state registration. Simultaneously, the process of registering candidates for the 2027 elections began, serving as an initial measure of strength both within and outside the ruling coalition.

While the PRI celebrated its electoral success, other parties faced challenges. The Green Party lost its local registration in Coahuila, though this was overshadowed by coverage of its internal processes and legislative initiatives. Although Morena advanced its internal registrations and defended its narrative of sovereignty, its overall standing was impacted by these challenges.

Setbacks in Veracruz, Durango, and Coahuila led Ariadna Montiel to respond with accusations against the PRI for alleged vote-buying, while the party faced pressures from the CNTE, questions about the cancellation of visas for its governors, and the debate over the Félix Salgado Macedonio case.
