Priest punches village president in churchyard dispute in Greece

An unprecedented incident unfolded in the churchyard of the Prophet Elias church in Neochori, Karditsa, Greece, on Sunday morning, disrupting the local community. A heated argument between the village priest and the president of the local community, Fotis Mantziafos, escalated into a physical confrontation.

Eyewitnesses reported that the priest allegedly punched the community president, who was subsequently taken to the hospital. Both men were later detained at the police station following reciprocal complaints. A third village resident was also reportedly held after the priest filed a complaint for insult.

The dispute reportedly began when Mantziafos and other villagers arrived to prepare for the upcoming feast of Prophet Elias, which traditionally includes a village celebration. Their preparations, involving moving tables, were interrupted by a van carrying three individuals intending to decorate the churchyard for a wedding. Mantziafos, unaware of the wedding, called the priest to resolve the situation.

According to Mantziafos, the priest arrived and demanded in a harsh tone that everyone leave and remove their belongings. The villagers protested, pointing out their extensive preparations. The priest then called the police. An officer from the local police department arrived, attempting to de-escalate the situation, but the disagreement over the use of the churchyard space led to a renewed, intense argument. Mantziafos claims the priest attacked him, striking him in the head and causing him to fall to the ground.

Local officials and residents arrived at the scene, but the conflict persisted. Following the alleged assault, Mantziafos was taken to the hospital for first aid. The priest was taken to the police station as a detainee. Both men filed lawsuits against each other, and the third resident also faces charges. Police compiled case files for the prosecutor, who will decide on further legal proceedings.
