Priest's 20-year abuse case stuns criminologist: 'Hard to believe no one knew'

A Lithuanian criminologist has voiced astonishment at the prolonged period during which a priest allegedly committed sexual offenses, with no apparent knowledge or intervention from those around him. The priest faces 34 charges related to crimes against children, reportedly spanning over two decades.

While acknowledging that cases of sexual abuse within the church and other closed institutions are not rare, the criminologist found the scale and duration of these alleged crimes particularly surprising. He noted that in the past, such incidents might have gone unnoticed due to less public awareness and a greater reverence for religious institutions. However, he expressed disbelief that in contemporary times, when the issue of child sexual abuse is widely known and analyzed, such extensive alleged offenses could occur without detection.

"It is hard to believe that no one knew, no one noticed," the criminologist stated, emphasizing his particular surprise that no one within the church hierarchy was aware. He pointed out that the accused priest served in multiple parishes, suggesting ample opportunity for his alleged actions to be observed by parishioners and fellow clergy.

The expert also highlighted that such crimes often occur in structures with a power imbalance, where one party is subordinate to another. He cited prisons and orphanages as other examples of such environments. Within the church, this dynamic is amplified by the priest's role as a spiritual authority figure, especially when working with children, creating conditions conducive to exploitation.
