Prince's 'Purple Rain' Musical to Hit Broadway in Spring 2027

Prince's legendary 1984 film "Purple Rain" is getting a second life on Broadway, with a new musical adaptation set to open in spring 2027. The production aims to honor Prince's legacy while introducing his timeless music to a new generation.

The musical will feature some of Prince's biggest hits, including "When Doves Cry," "I Would Die 4 U," "Take Me with You," and the title track "Purple Rain." It will be staged at New York's Majestic Theatre, with previews beginning March 12, 2027, and an official opening on April 12.

This new Broadway iteration marks a shift from the musical's initial creative team. The world premiere, which took place last year at the State Theatre in Minneapolis, was penned by award-winning writer Branden Jacobs-Jenkins and directed by Lileana Blain-Cain. For the Broadway production, director Sahim Ali and book writer Peter Duchan have been brought on board.

Musicians Bobby Z and Morris Hayes, who collaborated with Prince for years as members of his band, are serving as music supervisors. Orin Wolf, producer of the "Buena Vista Social Club" musical, is the lead producer.

The story of the musical follows the plot of the original film, where Prince starred as a young musician known as "The Kid." He navigates the music scene, striving for fame with his band while confronting personal struggles, a rival singer, and a new romance. Prince himself wrote the songs for the film, earning an Academy Award for Best Original Score.
