Prison Search in La Joya Seizes Weapons, Over 250 Cell Phones, and Suspected Drugs

Panama's National Police carried out a significant search operation at the La Joya Penitentiary, resulting in the seizure of prohibited items, including firearms, a large quantity of cell phones, and suspected narcotics.

The operation was developed specifically in pavilions #1, #2, and Guantánamo #1, where the units located the prohibited items in different clandestine hiding places within the penal center.

The operation, which focused on pavilions #1, #2, and Guantánamo #1 within the prison, uncovered three firearms, 253 mobile phones, and six bundles containing suspected illicit substances. Additionally, 38 small bags of what is believed to be dried marijuana and 11 bags containing a white powder were found. These items were discovered concealed in various clandestine hiding spots throughout the facility.

The action is part of the control and security operations that are being developed within the penitentiary centers to detect prohibited objects and prevent possible criminal acts.

Authorities have described the search as a routine measure within the framework of ongoing control and security operations in correctional facilities. The primary objective is to identify and confiscate forbidden items and proactively prevent potential criminal acts originating from within the prisons. The National Police affirmed their commitment to continuing such interventions in collaboration with the General Directorate of the Penitentiary System of the Ministry of Government to enhance overall prison security.
