Prisoner Escapes from Bruges Hospital During Medical Treatment; Manhunt Underway

A prisoner receiving medical care at Sint-Jan hospital in Bruges, Belgium, managed to escape on Wednesday morning, prompting a significant police response. The incident occurred while the inmate was undergoing treatment, leading to a lockdown of the hospital and a widespread manhunt.

According to police spokesperson Lien Depoorter, authorities were alerted to the escape and immediately dispatched several patrols and a special assistance team. However, the man was found to be outside the hospital premises shortly after the alarm was raised. The suspect is reportedly of Russian nationality and was in the hospital for a medical procedure.

The escape reportedly happened during a change of clothes. While the hospital has since reopened, consultations and appointments may experience delays due to the ongoing security measures. Police have maintained a heightened presence around the facility.

Authorities are conducting an intensive search for the escapee, described as being in possession of a sharp object. A federal police helicopter and a tracking dog have been deployed to aid in the search efforts. Police are pursuing all leads vigorously, emphasizing the urgency of recapturing the individual.
