Prisoner Killed, Another Injured in Firearm Incident at Bolivian Maximum-Security Jail

A serious incident involving a firearm unfolded at the San Pedro de Chonchocoro prison in La Paz, Bolivia, on Sunday, July 19. The General Directorate of Penitentiary Regime confirmed that an inmate, identified as Lucas Reséndiz Sarabia, initiated a violent confrontation by discharging a weapon.

According to an official statement, Reséndiz Sarabia's actions put the lives of other inmates and the security personnel at risk. Prison security officers immediately activated safety protocols, resulting in the neutralization of the aggressor. During the exchange, another inmate sustained injuries and was promptly transported to the Hospital de Clínicas for medical treatment.

The inmate who was neutralized, identified as LRS, died as a result of the incident. Penitentiary authorities described him as a "high-risk" individual, noting that he was serving a 30-year sentence and had been transferred to Chonchocoro due to a history of violence in other correctional facilities.

The circumstances surrounding how the firearm entered the maximum-security prison are now under investigation. Authorities aim to clarify the details of the incident and determine the precise sequence of events that led to the violence.
