Probe into Dark Horse film financing may accelerate, deepening STF divisions

A decision by Minister Flávio Dino could speed up investigations into the alleged illegal financing of the film Dark Horse, while also potentially exacerbating internal divisions within Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF).

Dino authorized the Civil Police of São Paulo to share data seized in an operation targeting Karina Ferreira da Gama, a partner in the production company behind the film about Jair Bolsonaro. This material will bolster investigations led by Dino himself, who is examining the injection of parliamentary funds into companies linked to the film's production.

In parallel, Minister André Mendonça is overseeing a separate inquiry into the film's financing. This investigation stems from indications that Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, a presidential candidate, allegedly sought funds from Daniel Vorcaro, owner of Banco Master, to cover part of the film's costs. Mendonça was already investigating Banco Master.

The political backdrop is significant, as Mendonça was appointed by Jair Bolsonaro, while Dino was nominated by President Lula. The ministers frequently diverge on legal interpretations, as seen in their differing votes on cases related to a coup attempt, where Mendonça leaned towards acquittals while Dino aligned with stricter sentences. A recent dispute over the investigation of a leak concerning "Lulinha," President Lula's son, further strained their relationship, highlighting the ongoing tensions within the STF.
