Prof Kasumu, SAN Passes on at 92

Professor Alfred Bandele Kasunmu, SAN, a prominent legal figure and former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice for Lagos State, has died at the age of 92. He passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 9, 2026. The Kasunmu family confirmed his death in an official statement, expressing gratitude for his "life well spent."

Born on May 23, 1934, in Lagos, Professor Kasunmu pursued higher education at University College London, earning both Bachelor and Master of Laws degrees. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1964. His career spanned academia, public service, and private practice. He began his teaching career in 1964 at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) and later joined the University of Lagos in 1971, rising to become Professor of Law and Dean of the Faculty of Law from 1973 to 1975.

Professor Kasunmu's commitment to public service led to his appointment as Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice for Lagos State from 1975 to 1978. In 1978, he was conferred with the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), becoming one of the earliest practitioners to achieve this distinction. Following his public service, he established the law firm Professor A.B. Kasunmu’s Chambers LP in Lagos.

Throughout his career, Professor Kasunmu authored and co-authored numerous legal texts and articles that are considered foundational to Nigerian jurisprudence. He also represented clients in significant domestic and international litigation and arbitration cases. Funeral arrangements are to be announced by the family in due course.
