Professor Vytautas Žulkus Named Honorary Citizen of Klaipėda

Professor Vytautas Žulkus will be honored as an Honorary Citizen of Klaipėda, following a decision by the city's Municipal Council. The council cited his substantial contributions to the historical understanding of Klaipėda, the reinforcement of its cultural identity, and the promotion of the city's reputation both domestically and internationally.

Since 1974, Žulkus has dedicated himself to researching Klaipėda Castle and its old town. His work also encompasses the analysis of the Curonian prehistory and investigations into underwater cultural heritage sites. He has been particularly instrumental in the research, historical interpretation, and reconstruction efforts related to Klaipėda Castle.

One of Žulkus's most significant achievements is his comprehensive account of Klaipėda's early history (13th–18th centuries). He developed a new model for the city's development, challenging and correcting previously held, erroneous interpretations. His scholarly output includes dozens of monographs and articles, earning him recognition across Lithuania and beyond.

Beyond his research, Žulkus also served as the Rector of Klaipėda University, nurturing future historians and archaeologists and guiding doctoral students. The title of Honorary Citizen is bestowed for exceptional contributions to the city and its global renown. The award, which includes a special badge and a certificate, will be formally presented on August 1, marking Klaipėda's birthday. Last year, the title was awarded to marine painter Edvardas Malinauskas.
