Project Launched to Eradicate Invasive Slugs in Lithuania

Lithuania's Ministry of Environment has initiated a significant project aimed at eradicating invasive slugs, with a particular focus on the Spanish slug, known scientifically as Arion vulgaris. This invasive species poses a considerable threat to local ecosystems and agriculture due to its rapid reproduction rate.

The project has been allocated a budget of approximately 440,000 euros to fund its various control and eradication efforts. A key component of the initiative involves public participation, with residents being encouraged to report any sightings of these invasive slugs through the dedicated INVA online system. This citizen-science approach is crucial for monitoring the spread and identifying hotspots of infestation.

Spanish slugs are notorious for their prolific breeding; a single slug can lay up to 500 eggs annually. To combat their proliferation, the project recommends a multi-pronged approach. Methods include manual collection of slugs, the use of molluscicides, maintaining short grass, managing breeding grounds, and setting up traps, especially around composting areas. It is vital that collected slugs are properly destroyed, rather than released back into the environment, by methods such as salting or leaving them in sealed containers in the sun.
